Patients Scaling Back on Cosmetic Surgeries
from Baltimore Examiner
Instead of a full face-lift, a patient may opt to just have her eyelids done. Or perhaps a patient would have fewer Botox injections. Cosmetic surgery patients are scaling back as the recession puts a strain on their finances. "People are choosing less," said Dr. Craig Vander Kolk, associate director of plastic surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. In a recent survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, 82 percent of surgeons said their patients were choosing less expensive procedures, and 70 percent said patients were opting for nonsurgical procedures, such as Botox. Nearly 80 percent of surgeons said they have been affected by the downturn, the survey found. More

Eye candy might more appropriately be called brain candy. Seeing a pretty face is like eating a piece of oh-so-sweet chocolate — for the brain, A product originally developed as a possible way to treat battlefield injuries is now part of an anti-aging treatment. As we age, most of us keep our eyes open for new procedures that may reduce the affects of aging skin. Now there is a new, non-invasive anti-aging treatment. Topical tretinoin, a frequently prescribed retinoid cream, is associated with increased all-cause mortality, according to study results published in the January issue of the Archives of Dermatology. Martin A. Weinstock, MD, PhD, of the VA Medical Center in Providence, RI, and colleagues initiated the Veterans Affairs Topical Tretinoin Chemoprevention (VATTC) study, a randomized chemoprevention trial designed to test whether topical tretinoin could reduce the risk of keratinocyte cancers. A total of 1,131 veterans (mean age 71 years) were randomized to receive twice-daily application of either topical tretinoin cream (0.1 percent) or a vehicle control. More

Neck Rejuvenation
from East Valley Living
Turkey neck, double chin, just plain saggy jowls are issues that we all will have to deal with eventually-some sooner than others. Traditionally, the solution has been a face and neck lift that requires incisions to be made from above the ear, extending to below and behind the ear, allowing a surgeon to “redrape” the loose skin and snip it off. The results from these lifts for saggy necks can be very good, but surgery is not for everyone. In this world of minimally and non-invasive cosmetic solutions, it is time to address your options for tightening the neck without surgery. More

Personalized Cosmetic Procedures Provide Best Results
from Baylor College of Medicine
If a cosmetic procedure is in the budget for the New Year, or even if it isn't, doctors at Baylor College of Medicine advise keeping skin tone and texture in mind when making cosmetic decisions. People with darker skin tones often have hyperpigmentation, or skin discoloration. Some have worries about exuberant scarring like keloids, an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. They can be treated with steroid injections, creams and radiation or removal with an incision. More
