Boston Hospital Performs Nation's Second Face Transplant

A Boston hospital has performed the nation's second face transplant on a man who suffered traumatic facial injuries from a fall. Hospital spokesman Kevin Myron said the 17-hour operation took place Thursday at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital. A team led by plastic surgeon Dr. Bohdan Pomahac replaced the man's nose, palate, upper lip, and some skin, muscles and nerves with those of a dead donor. More

Scattered during the early years of a long marriage, episodes of physical and emotional abuse escalated when the husband of one older Pittsburgh area woman retired. In time, a counselor at the Crisis Center told her about Give Back a Smile, a national program run by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry's charitable foundation, which provides free cosmetic dental repairs to victims of domestic abuse. The Smile charity is one of three national pro bono programs designed to fix faces and bodies damaged by abusive domestic partners, be they men or women, who are the overwhelming majority. One of the others is Face to Face, a 14-year-old charitable project of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which does repairs to the face, head and neck. More

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the largest association of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons, released a new survey that said there has been in an increase in non-invasive cosmetic procedures over the past year. The survey of board certified facial plastic surgeons said the business has been hit by the economic and credit crisis, but non invasive procedures such as lasers, dermabrasion and intense pulse laser treatments are on the rise. Three out of four physicians said they treated patients who wanted these options to stay competitive in the workplace. And Botox remains a hot trend. According to the survey, 60 percent of plastic surgeons have treated women under the age of 35. Surgeons also said the future is bright for consumers as more cosmetic fillers hit the marketplace. More
