Artefill Maker Files Bankruptcy, Fires Staff

Artes Medical, makers of the permanent filler Artefill, has filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and may be forced to liquidate its assets. The Web sites for both Artes and Artefill are already shut down. This announcement follows the recent bankruptcy by Rhytec Inc, makers of Portrait. The firm cited reduced consumer spending on its cosmetic treatment due to the poor economy. More

First Face Transplant Performed in U.S.

The Cleveland Clinic announced it has performed the nation’s first almost total face transplant. A hospital spokeswoman said that the operation was done a couple weeks ago. Reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow replaced 80 percent of a woman’s face with that of a dead female donor.

St. Catherine's Offers Abuse Victims a Fresh Outlook

A Smithtown, N.Y., hospital is offering victims of domestic violence a fresh look, and outlook. St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown announced the arrival of the Face to Face program in Suffolk County. Face to Face is a national humanitarian effort to provide pro bono facial reconstruction surgery for the victims of domestic violence. The surgery aims to boost victims' confidence by restoring their unscarred appearance, hospital officials said.
