The Management of Xerostomia

Dorland's Medical Dictionary defines xerostomia as a "dryness of the mouth from lack of the normal secretions." Dry mouth as a clinical sign was first described in 1868 by Bartley.1 Bartley's definition of this condition was based on objective clinical evidence of dry oral mucosa, obliteration of the salivary duct orifices, and/or glossitis. In 1889, Hutchinson gave the term xerostomia to this condition. Xerostomia is a subjective complaint. AMA Resolution Leaves Door Open to 'Public Option' for Health Care

The American Medical Association is keeping an open mind on President Barack Obama's health-reform proposals, including certain measures that use public dollars, the group's policy-making body ruled. The AMA's 543-member policy-making body passed a resolution to support health care reform alternatives that are "consistent with AMA principles," but it stripped the words "public option" from the resolution. Treatment Outcomes and Factors Influencing the Progress of Osteoradionecrosis

The medical records of 114 patients who had been treated for ORN during a 16-year period (1989 to 2004) were reviewed. The patients were then divided into two groups according to their response to conservative treatment. Group 1 consisted of patients whose ORN resolved with conservative treatment (n = 47). Group 2 consisted of patients whose ORN was unresolved with conservative treatment or who had required radical resection of the involved tissue (n = 67).
