Exposure to alkaline substances can result in damaged teeth
Science Daily Share
It has long been known that acids can erode tooth enamel but a new Swedish study from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg shows that strong alkaline substances can damage teeth too – substances with high pH values can destroy parts of the organic content of the tooth, leaving the enamel more vulnerable. The science behind why a diseased mouth puts one at a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes, along with recent new evidence showing improvements in oral health having a positive impact on reducing atherosclerosis or plaque in arteries, is leading more dentists and physicians to become aware of how this may
possibly affect their patient's general health and medical conditions.

The influence of remaining alveolar bone upon lateral window sinus augmentation implant survival
Implant Dentistry
Share

Sinus augmentation is a predictable procedure to increase bone height in the posterior maxilla to facilitate ideal implant placement. However, the effect of residual alveolar bone height upon overall implant success remains unclear. The
objective of this study was to review and evaluate the correlation between amount of remaining crest alveolar bone before sinus augmentation and implant survival rate in grafted areas.

David Hastings, a spokesperson for the Oral Cancer Foundation, said his ability to hear, taste, and produce saliva was impaired after "brutal and barbaric" treatment for oral cancer, which was triggered by an HPV-16 infection. Oral cancer, he said, claimed more lives than cervical cancer, and HPV was the
fastest-growing cause of this disease.

Microleakage under lingual retainer composite bonded with an antibacterial monomer-containing adhesive system
World Journal of Orthodontics
Share

This study sought to determine and compare the microleakage of a conventional acid-etched, light-cured lingual retainer adhesive system with a recently developed antibacterial monomer-containing adhesive with and without etching. Methods:
Sixty human mandibular incisors were separated into three groups of 20 teeth each. Samples were sealed with nail varnish, stained with 0.5 percent basic fuchsin, and sectioned. Transverse sections were evaluated under a stereomicroscope and scored for microleakage in millimeters at the composite-enamel interface.

Bacterial contamination of surgical scrubs and laundering mechanisms: Infection control implications
Infection Control Today
Share

The objective is to assess the bioburden associated with surgical scrub garments separated into eight categories
based on single-use/re-usable status, use status (prior to use versus after use), and, for re-usable scrub garments, laundering mechanism(facility-laundered, third-party laundered and home-laundered). The study's aim was to determine whether or not this information provided any insight into the safety and efficacy of re-usable versus single-use scrubs and laundering mechanism.

Immune peptide shows potential to help diagnose oral cancer
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

Several years ago, a team of NIDCR supported scientists discovered something quite interesting about cultured oral keratinocytes, cells that form the lining of the mouth and its soft tissues. The scientists confirmed that when pathogens challenge oral keratinocytes, these cells produce a variety of short
antimicrobial peptides called β-defensins. What made the discovery interesting is that the β-defensins were differentially expressed when exposed to different immune signaling molecules.

Thirty four million Americans have dentures and about one third utilize denture cream to secure dentures in the mouth. Users of denture creams are being warned that zinc in certain products has been linked to neurological damage. A 2008 study released by the American Academy of Neurology tested four patients with
dentures who used excessive amounts of denture cream and the zinc concentrations in Fixodent and Poligrip. The study concluded that the denture creams contain zinc, and chronic excessive use may result in hypocupremia and serious neurologic disease.

Doctor, I'm pregnant
American Dental Association

"Doctor, I'm pregnant." The reference is to a female patient informing you, her dentist, that she is pregnant. She has concerns about risk to the fetus and how her pregnancy will affect her dental treatment. How should you respond? First, accept that there is no simple answer that meets the needs and situation for
every patient; that's why they call you "doctor." Otherwise, any staff member could provide an answer and, given the chance, they would.
