Fire Sprinkler Saves Animals from Fire

Fire officials say a sprinkler system saved animals when a fire broke out at a Maryville, Wash., pet store. When crews arrived they discovered the building full of smoke. The roof had not collapsed, but there had been a fire in a back room and two heads of the sprinkler system had activated and extinguished it. Fire officials say although there was water damage, had the sprinkler system not been there, the animals and building most likely would have been a total loss. More

Sprinkler Helps Suppress Drugstore Fire

Fire officials are calling the fire in the Wilsonville Rite Aid an object lesson in the benefits of installing fire-suppression systems in all new construction. Firefighters arrived at this Wilsonville, Ore., drugstore and found a small fire burning in a work room next to the pharmacy. A single sprinkler head kept the fire from growing. "Without a fire sprinkler system, this fire could have grown much larger, potentially injuring occupants and causing a lot more damage to the building and contents," said Cassandra Ulven, spokeswoman for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Activated Sprinkler Douses Apartment Blaze

A fire broke out in the Tides apartment building in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The fire started in the 16th floor penthouse of the building, activating the sprinkler system, which doused the flames. The Ft. Lauderdale Fire Department is investigating the cause of the two-alarm fire. More

Lumber Facility Fire Kept in Check by Sprinklers

Firefighters spent the morning putting out a fire at an East Hartford, Conn., lumber facility, which resulted in little damage to the building and no injuries. Acting Assistant Fire Chief James Silver said the call came when an employee arriving for work discovered the fire. The fire, which he described as “moderately-sized,” was kept in check by the sprinkler system until firefighters arrived, Silver said. More

College Fraternity House Closed Due to Failure to Install Sprinklers

McCormick University senior Donnie Redding had less than a month to move out. Redding and the five other students living in his fraternity, Chi Phi, were required to vacate the house before the locks were changed on Jan. 1. According to Chi Phi president Andrew Lang, the fraternity failed to install a $50,000 fire sprinkler system, breaking Evanston, Ill., fire code laws issued in 2004 that allowed city residents four years to comply.
