Westernport, Md., Mandates Home Sprinklers

 The Westernport, Md., Mayor and Town Council approved a municipal ordinance that will require installation of sprinklers in new homes built in the community. Meeting for their monthly session, the council voted 3-1 in favor of the ordinance, which would take effect one year from now if it passes at a second reading next month.

Sprinkler Saves Retirement Home from Serious Fire

A sprinkler in a retirement home averted what could have been a complex-wide fire, according to the Bremerton, Wash., Fire Department. Firefighters pinpointed where a sprinkler was going off using maps and the building's alarm system. The fire, on the first floor of the four-story building, had already been put out by the sprinkler. "If there had been no sprinklers that fire would have burned and burned and burned," Bremerton Fire Marshal Scott Rappleye said.

Bus Fire Quickly Extinguished by Sprinkler

A bus caught fire inside a depot in the Rockland County-owned health complex in Ramapo, N.Y. Quick thinking on the part of employees who used a fire extinguisher to fight the blaze as well as the work of an indoor sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading, said Gordon Wren Jr., the county's fire coordinator.
"That sprinkler system just paid for itself," he said.

It could have been a tragedy at Shelton High School in Shelton, Conn., when fire broke out in a storage room with smoke quickly spreading through the hallways Dec. 30. Fortunately, there were few people in the Meadow Street School that day because it was closed for Christmas break, and no one was injured. The fire, caused by a discarded cigarette and contained in the storage room, was put out in minutes. Damage, mainly caused by smoke, could run as much as $2 million, according to Mayor Mark A. Mandatory Sprinklers in All Nursing Homes Would Save Lives

Timmins, Ontario, fire prevention officer Denis Lebrun says it's like having a fireman on your property all the time. He calls it simply perfect. "It's the greatest thing," he said. "You can't beat them. It reduces smoke content quite a bit and reduces the spread of smoke so it's a big lifesaver and confines the fire to that one area." Lebrun is talking about sprinkler systems. Research Facility Fire Doused by Sprinklers

Employees at Unilever's research facility in Trumbull, Conn., Industrial Park were evacuated when a small fire broke out in an oven, fire officials said. Deputy Fire Marshal Alex Rauso said the fire broke out in the company's facility when an oven used to keep "raw product" warm malfunctioned. "Luckily, the sprinkler system activated and the sprinkler system pretty much extinguished the fire," Rauso said.
