Columbia, S.C., Fire Department Begins New Program to Encourage Sprinkler Use

Columbia, S.C., Fire Chief Bradley Anderson, Deputy Chief Aubrey Jenkins and Assistant Chief Carmen Floyd joined Joe Palmer, John Reich, and other dignitaries at a press conference kicking off a new way to promote the use of sprinklers. The Columbia Fire Marshals, under the direction of Chief Floyd, will put a logo on buildings that have a full operational sprinkler system. This will tell visitors, residents, and firefighters said building is participating in a campaign to reduce fire deaths and property loss. More

Sprinkler System Saves Lives, Apartment Complex in Roanoke County, Va.

A sprinkler system, in an apartment complex, likely saved the lives of the residents who lived there after a fire broke out. Roanoke County, Va., Fire and Rescue was dispatched for a reported structure fire. When firefighters arrived they found an already extinguished grease fire on the stove. The building’s sprinkler system had activated and doused the fire causing only minimal damage to the hood over the stove, along with water damage to the carpeting. “This could have been a tragic fire, but the sprinkler system did its job and likely saved some lives and property,” believes Gary Huffman, Roanoke County Fire Marshal. Sanbornton, N.H., Resort Fire Doused by Sprinklers

A fire caused by towels left on a heating duct was extinguished by the sprinkler system at Steele Hill Inn in Sanbornton, N.H. Lt. Linda Suroweic said the fire department received a signal that a smoke detector and then the sprinkler system had been activated. "Fortunately the sprinkler system worked perfectly, " she said, but added the remoteness of the resort and that the fire was in the older restaurant building prompted the first alarm. More

Clemson University Dorm Fire Controlled by Sprinkler

No one was injured and damage was minor after a sprinkler extinguished a small fire at Cox North Hospital in Springfield, Mo., according to the Springfield Fire Department. It appeared a sprinkler extinguished a fire in a records room on the hospital complex's fifth floor before firefighters actually got the room, Battalion Capt. Brad Eden said.
