Nashville, Tenn., Fire Chief Supports New Sprinkler Code from NBC- Nashville - Feb. 11, 2009
When the Nashville Fire Chief Steve Halford wanted to show how badly the city needs sprinklers, he turned to a recent Channel 4 I-Team investigation for evidence. Halford showed the I-Team investigation to members of the Metro Council. The story found hundreds of fire hydrants across the city do not discharge the amount of water needed to adequately fight a fire. As the I-Team found, homes burned completely as a result. The fire chief showed the story because he is trying to urge the council not to adopt a bill that would do away with a fire code provision that requires sprinklers in new homes built in front of low- flow hydrants.

Firefighters say sprinklers would likely have made a huge difference, and might have limited damages to one unit and only $5,000.

Sprinklers Help Douse Bremerton, Wash., Fire
from Kitsap Sun – Feb. 12, 2009 An apartment fire was kept in check thanks to the building's fire sprinklers, according to the Bremerton Fire Department. A sprinkler system in the lower level apartment where the fire started had activated, which helped keep the fire from spreading.
Fire crews put out the fire and secured the sprinkler system when they arrived.
This is the second recent fire in which sprinklers helped prevent a larger conflagration, according to the Bremerton's Fire Marshal's Office.

from KCCI – Feb. 11, 2009 Investigators have not yet said what started a fire that destroyed a home in Urbandale, Iowa, valued at more than $1 million. Many local suburban communities require larger homes to be built with sprinkler systems that can minimize damage in case of a fire.
West Des Moines Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell said the sprinklers buy firefighters time to save the home and its occupants. "They're going to give you that chance to at least contain the fire, if not put it out, for you and your family to make it safely outside," Whitsell said. More
