The recent change in the White House and Congress is the topic of this month’s joint broadcast of Campus Firewatch Radio and Fire Marshal’s Corner. The podcast begins with an overview of the provisions of the Campus Fire Safety Right-to-Know which are undergoing the rulemaking phase at the Department of Education. Podcast host Ed Comeau, the publisher of Campus Firewatch, has been appointed to the committee that will be developing these regulations and provides and overview of the process.

Maine Fire Raises Sprinkler System Concerns
from WCSH – Feb. 24, 2009 After a serious fire demolished a house on the Gray-Windham line in Maine, Deputy Chief John Westcott stressed the importance of residential sprinkler systems. The fire, caused by a generator, brought the sprinkler system issue to the forefront.
In rural areas of Maine, such as Windham, crews responding to fires have a difficult time getting access and water to the sites. Too few hydrants and too many narrow roads are cause for concern.
Firefighters believe there may be one way to relieve the problem, and that is residential sprinkler systems.

Fire Sprinkler Installations in Greek Houses up for Debate
from The Maneater – Feb. 23, 2009 The Columbia Fire Sprinkler Task Force discussed the enforcement of sprinklers in Greek houses at the University of Missouri at Columbia, which followed a small fire in Greektown on Feb. 22. Donna Henson, mother of deceased fraternity member Dominic Passantino, spoke at the meeting. Passantino died in a fire at his fraternity house in 1999. Henson said she wants to warn other parents of the dangers of inadequate fire protection in student housing.

Sprinkler System Quickly Douses Bass Pro Shop Fire
from Prattville Progress – Feb. 24, 2009 Prattville, Ala., firefighters responded to the activation of a fire alarm at the city's Bass Pro Shop. PFD personnel rushed to the outdoor retailer after the store's fire suppression system triggered an alarm. The damage to the display was minimal, the fire marshal said. "If it had not been for that sprinkler system, the loss most likely would have been significant. The business is still up and running, people still have jobs. I was absolutely thrilled that the system worked like it was planned to do." More
Lake Jackson, Texas, Fire Sprinkler Ordinance Further Reduced
from The Facts – Feb. 19, 2009 Lake Jackson, Texas, again has revised its new fire sprinkler requirements, this time easing the mandate on small businesses afraid of the safety system’s expense. City Council amended the ordinance to apply only to commercial buildings of more than 8,000 square feet. The decision comes the same night council gave final approval to suspending a requirement that sprinklers be installed in all new and remodeled homes.

Sprinklers Prevent Serious Damage at El Paso, Texas, Restaurant
from El Paso Times – Feb. 23, 2009 Eight El Paso, Texas, Fire Department units responded to an alarm-activated call at the city's Wing Stop Restaurant. Once inside, firefighters found only minimal fire damage on top of a stove because two sprinkler heads had gone off and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries.

Family Sues Apartment Complex for Lack of Sprinklers
from The Tennessean – Feb. 22, 2009 Sarah Regen might be alive today if the Nashville, Tenn., apartment where she lived had sprinklers, according to her family. Her relatives have filed a lawsuit against the apartment owners, Metropolitan Nashville Teachers' Apartment Inc., seeking $5 million in damages. "My clients' biggest concern is that this will happen to someone else," said Nashville lawyer John Norris, who is representing Regen's family. Metro has been trying to get the complex to install sprinklers for years, the lawsuit alleges. More
