Minn. Delays Adoption of Home Sprinkler Code from Fire Rescue 1 – Feb. 25, 2009
Rules to mandate automatic fire sprinklers in new homes constructed after Jan. 1, 2011, will be delayed, the Minn. Department of Labor and Industry says. In a decision announced in a letter to code officials, design professionals and contractors, the state agency cited four criteria in its decision not to move forward with the adoption of the 2009 building code recommendations that include the mandatory sprinkler provision.

Sprinklers Extinguish Fire at Illini Tower
from Urbana/Champagne News-Gazette – March 2, 2009 Sprinklers quickly extinguished a small fire in a 14th-floor apartment, but caused water damage at Illini Tower, in Champagne, Ill. A sprinkler head activated to extinguish a small fire in a south bedroom of a four-bedroom apartment, Champaign fire spokeswoman Dena Schumacher said. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Vacant Buildings in Dover, Del., Spark Fire Safety Worries
from Dover Post – Feb. 24, 2009 Dover’s firefighters are finding they must deal with a greater number of problems if one of those empty stores and warehouses throughout town ever catches fire. A report points out a problem faced by city inspectors: differentiating between vacant buildings where the owners are known and can be held responsible for their upkeep, and abandoned structures where there apparently is no one the city can go to and demand they be secured. Much of that has to do with keeping fire alarms and sprinkler systems in good repair, according to the report. More

Task Force Urges Giving Campus Houses More Time to Install Sprinklers

Maine Apartment Fire Doused by Sprinklers
from WMTW – Feb. 26, 2009 Firefighters showed up to a wet kitchen in Sanford, Maine, after a pair of sprinkler heads helped to extinguish a fire. No one was injured in the fire. "If the sprinkler system had not been in place, we would still be there fighting a multi-alarm fire," said Fire Marshal Peter Cutrer of the Sanford-Springvale Fire Department.

Fire Kept Under Control by Sprinklers in Carlisle, Pa.
