 A sprinkler system in a New Bern, N.C., apartment building saved a family, neighbors and property damage. Fire broke out in a bedroom at an apartment unit. The sprinkler system in the apartment's bedroom was activated by the heat, enabling a couple and their small child to escape harm.

Michigan Residence Hall Fire Extinguished by Sprinklers

Students were evacuated from a University of Michigan residence hall after a small fire was intentionally set in the hallway of a lower floor, campus police reported.
The residence hall's sprinkler system extinguished the fire quickly, said Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for the campus police.

New Bill Would Provide Nursing Homes with Funding for Sprinklers

A new federal bill would help fund the installation of sprinkler systems. The Nursing Home Fire Safety Act of 2009 was introduced late last week. In this version of the bill, introduced by Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.), lawmakers would make available $450 million in direct loans and $100 million in assistance grants over the next five fiscal years for retrofitting and installation of sprinkler systems in all nursing homes.
