Tennessee Nursing Home Fire Controlled by Sprinklers

 Lightning was ruled the cause of a fire that damaged a nursing home in Franklin, Tenn., during a strong thunderstorm. Fire sprinklers controlled the blaze and Franklin firefighters extinguished flames within 20 minutes of arriving on the scene. No one was injured and the facility was never closed.

Long Beach, Calif., Approves New Sprinkler Policy

A deadly fire in North Long Beach more than two years ago raised questions about what to do with older buildings that did not have sprinkler systems.
Those questions finally were answered when the City Council approved creation of a new sprinker retrofit alternative policy for high-rise buildings and residential buildings with more than 50 units under one roof. The policy still must be written as an ordinance before it becomes law.

N. Idaho Firefighters Say Bill Will Endanger Lives

Legislation to eliminate the International Fire Code as a minimum standard in the state would endanger lives, north Idaho firefighters say. The Association of Idaho Cities and Idaho State Fire Commissioners Association oppose House Bill 202, a measure backed by contractors and real estate developers. The bill would limit code enforcement authority of the state fire marshal's office to public buildings and deregulate the design and installation of fire sprinklers. More
California Care Home Blaze Put Out by Single Sprinkler

Fire units arrived at the Rio Linda, Calif., care facility to find a small fire burning inside the facility's living room, Sacramento Metro Fire Capt. Christian Pebbles said.
The blaze, which was contained to a foam-stuffed sofa and window blinds, was put under controlled by one fire sprinkler head.

A small fire in a San Marin, Calif., High School restroom was quickly extinguished by the building's sprinkler system. Authorities suspect a student lit a toilet paper roll on fire.
The sprinkler system was activated and a single sprinkler in the restroom extinguished the flames, Novato fire officials reported.
