Virginia Sprinkler Debate Splits Firefighters, Builders

 A statewide mandate requiring fire sprinklers to be installed in single-family homes has sparked a heated debate, dividing firefighters and homebuilders throughout Virginia.
At a September meeting, the International Code Commission approved various codes, including one calling for the installation of a fire sprinkler system in new one- and two-family homes. States have the option of adopting the code in full, or in part. In this case, the Virginia Board of Housing and Community Development has chosen at this point to strike the sprinkler requirement from the code. But the board's decision isn't final. Residents can still give feedback before the panel meets July 27 to vote on proposed code regulations that would take effect in 2010.

Pasadena, Calif., firefighters responded to a fire at the Fantastis Shots inside the Pasadena Town Square Mall. Upon their arrival, they found the building's sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire was an electric lamp that caught a backdrop on fire.

Ohio Assisted Living Facility Fire Doused by Sprinklers

Police said a 60-year-old man is in jail, accused of trying to set the assisted living center where he lives on fire.
A fire was set to a bedroom at the South Park Assisted Living home in Dayton, Ohio.
The home’s sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading until firefighters arrived to douse the flames. Damage was very limited.
