Lightning Strikes Propane Line, Sprinklers Put Out Fire

A family in Salem, N.H., is trying to figure out what they can salvage from their home. Lightning struck a tree in their backyard and a propane line about 20 feet from the house carried the current into the basement, igniting a fire. Sprinklers inside the home extinguished the flames within minutes. The owners said they are glad to have the sprinkler system. More

Sprinklers Extinguish Fire at New Tulalip Hotel in Washington state

Sprinklers Could Have Helped Torch Lit Complex

A construction worker removing steel frames with an acetylene torch accidentally started a fire that destroyed two apartment buildings and left nearly 400 people homeless. Workers at the construction site did not take sufficient fire safety precautions, Attorney Robert Mongeluzzi said. The occupied buildings also did not have sprinkler systems in the attic, he said.
''That would have doused the flames,'' Mongeluzzi said. ''It never would have burned down.'' More
