Sprinklers Now a Must for U.S. Nursing Homes

After decades of partial solutions to fire threats in nursing homes, regulators are finally requiring sprinkler systems for the 2,466 facilities that still don't have them fully installed. On Aug. 13, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a rule declaring that the $144 billion long-term care industry has five years to install the systems. Some 1.4 million residents live in 16,000 U.S. nursing homes. More

All Residence Halls Now Equipped with Sprinklers at Winthrop University

Students who live on the Winthrop University campus in Rock Hill, S.C., can feel a little safer this year thanks to fire sprinkler systems installed in campus residence halls. The university is one of the state's first higher education institutions with older residence halls to have all of its dorms equipped with sprinklers, said Walter Hardin, Winthrop associate vice president for facilities and management. Campus Fire Safety Advocate Congresswoman Jones, 53, Dies

Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) died at 6:12 pm of a brain hemorrhage Aug. 19. Jones was a leading advocate of campus fire safety and introduced a number of bills, including resolutions designating September as Campus Fire Safety Month, the College Fire Prevention Act and the Collegiate Infrastructure Act. Jones was also this year’s Congressional Co-Sponsor of the launch of National Campus Fire Safety Month on Capitol Hill. More

Fire Doused by Sprinkler at American Millwork

A sprinkler kept a fire at American Millwork & Cabinetry Inc. in Emmaus, Pa., from spreading to the rest of the facility. Within a few minutes of entering the building, firefighters had the flames out, according to Fire Chief James Reiss. More

Sprinkler Systems Handle Two Fires in Rochester

Two fires in Rochester, N.Y., were limited when sprinkler systems were able to contain flames until firefighters arrived. A pot left cooking on a stove apparently started the fire in a condo. The second fire took place at a kindercare learning center. More

Sprinkler Saves Salem School from Fire

A garbage bin fire threatened a Salem, Ore., primary school. The fire was burning in a garbage bin beneath an overhang outside the school. It set off a sprinkler head that extinguished the flames even before firefighters arrived. More
