Eighty students and campus fire-safety advocates joined law- and
policy-makers on Capitol Hill September 9 to launch National Campus
Fire Safety Month in order to raise awareness of students, parents,
and administrators of the importance of campus fire safety and the
steps they can take to prevent the needless loss of life. This year’s
theme, “Fire Safety – Take it Everywhere,” sends the important message
that fire safety does not stop at the campus borders nor when the

Sprinkler System Puts Out Sorority House Fire from Journal and Courier – Sept. 9, 2008 Purdue University police officers responded to a small fire at the Delta Gamma house on Purdue's campus in West Lafayette, Ind. PUPD Lt. Dennis Shepard said no one was injured when a sheet that was hanging was accidentally set on fire by a nearby candle. "The sprinkler system kicked in and put the fire out," Shepard said.

Sprinkler System Prevents Apartment Blaze
from Daily Camera – Sept. 3, 2008 A sprinkler system helped prevent another major apartment blaze in Boulder, Colo., a fire official said. Residents at The Hub apartments were evacuated when a grease fire set off sprinklers in a fourth-floor apartment.

Sprinklers Added to Southern Illinois University Resident Halls from SIU- Daily Egyptian – Sept. 3, 2008 Fire sprinklers were installed during the summer into four Thompson Point residence halls at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., said Deputy Housing Director Glenn Stine. The amenities are all part of a long-term housing plan to upgrade undergraduate dormitories that began three years ago with the installation of the same systems at the high-rise residence halls, Stine said. Valley Junction Buildings Get Sprinkler Systems from The Des Moines Register – Sept. 4, 2008 West Des Moines, Iowa, city officials will spend more than $600,000 for fire sprinkler systems in the century-old buildings that line Fifth Street in Valley Junction. The project will solve two problems: the lack of sprinklers has kept business owners from making changes to buildings that fail to meet safety codes; and a fire could easily spread between buildings because there's little or no space between them. Fire Extinguished at Campus Convenience in Durham, N.H. from Dover Community News - Sept. 10, 2008 An early morning fire in the food preparation area of a Main Street convenience store in Durham, N.H., was quickly knocked down by firefighters limiting most of the smoke and water damage to the first floor. The three-story brick building was safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. "The automatic sprinkler system in the building made all the difference,” said Chief Peter O’Leary. “Combined with early notification to the fire department it contained a fire that would have quickly spread.”More
