Celina, Texas Adopts Sprinkler Ordinance

Following months of planning, preparation and development, Celina, Texas City Council enacted a law requiring all future buildings and residences to be equipped with sprinkler systems. The new ordinance calls for any dwelling constructed after Sept. 16 to be equipped with a sprinkler system. More

Building Codes and NFPA 14 Seminars Sept. 25

The Alabama Fire Sprinkler Association will host two seminars September 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Orange Beach, Ala. The first seminar, "IBC and Fire Sprinklers", is designed to introduce you to many of the advantages fire sprinklers offer in the ICC codes, thereby helping you create an improved strategy for working in the Design/Build market. The second seminar, "NFPA 14, 2007 Edition", is designed to provide an overview of the standard as well as specific chapter-by-chapter discussion highlighting the specific requirements for the design and installation of standpipe systems and related component. Grand Opera House Foundation Votes for Sprinklers

The Grand Opera House Foundation Advisory Board voted unanimously to add sprinklers to the entire 125-year-old theater building in Oshkosh, Wis. The decision to add the sprinklers came after The Grand had begun construction on a second-floor lounge, which originally was slated to open in August. After the area the lounge was being constructed in was gutted, the Opera House Foundation learned from city staff that a variance granted by the state in 1982 meant that no more than 44 people could gather in the area that had formerly been made up of offices. University of Missouri Mock Residence Hall Fire Underscores Fire Risks

A crowd of curious students crowded around a model residence hall room to see it go up in flames. Presented by the Columbia Fire Department, Fire Factor 2008 educates students about fire safety and prevention. This year, the event included the burning of a mock room that showed how quickly fire can overtake a room. Besides preventive education, MU is taking other steps to prevent fire damage. Columbia Chief Fire Marshal Steven Sapp said he is impressed with MU's efforts to install more sprinkler systems throughout campus residence halls. More

Cost of Installing Residential Fire Sprinklers Averages $1.61 per Square Foot

A national perspective on the cost of installing residential fire sprinklers is examined in a new report Home Fire Sprinkler Cost Assessment, released Sept. 11 by the Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association. According to the report, the cost of installing sprinkler systems to the home builder averaged $1.61 per sprinklered square foot. Sprinklered square feet is the total area of spaces with sprinklers. Rochester Family Rebuilds Home, Installs Sprinklers After Fire
