Local Governments Steer Clear of Offering Sprinkler Tax Credits

Beaufort, S.C., area municipalities have been slow to embrace a new state law that gives taxpayers a hefty tax credit for installing sprinkler systems. Passed in June after the General Assembly unanimously overrode Gov. Mark Sanford's veto, the law gives local governments the option of providing a 25 percent property tax credit to property owners to offset the cost of installing the sprinklers. A matching state tax credit would then be offered for a combined tax savings of 50 percent. More

LSU Installs Sprinklers in Residence Halls

The department of Residential Life at Louisiana State University is making progress installing sprinkler systems in all the residence halls on campus, but it still has work to do. ResLife is adding complete sprinkler systems to all 16 residence halls. Steven Waller, ResLife director said there are only three residence halls, Evangeline Hall, Acadian and East Laville, open this semester without sprinkler systems in each room. More

A Single Sprinkler Puts out a Mariott Residence Inn Fire

The Roseville Fire Department responded to a fire at a Marriott Residence Inn in Roseville, Calif. When firefighters arrived they confirmed a fire had occurred in a room on the ground floor of the three story hotel. A single fire sprinkler extinguished the fire, which was caused by an unattended candle. This fire had much potential due to the nature of the occupancy”, stated Fire Chief Ken Wagner. “The fire sprinkler system had a significant and positive impact of the overall extent of fire damage. Sprinkler Extinguishes Apartment Fire

Newark, N.J., Fire Department responded to a call about an early morning fire in an apartment complex. Upon arrival, crews found a fire in Apartment 314 that had been extinguished by a sprinkler system, said Assistant Chief Bill Spurgeon. More.

Sprinklers Douse Fire at Las Vegas High School

Sprinklers stopped flames in a Las Vegas high school's theater. When firefighters arrived, maintenance workers unlocked the building and the fire was found behind a stage in the school's theater where props and costumes are stored, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.
