  Sprinklers save Oregon high school

The head custodian of Pacific High School in Port Orford, Ore., found water coming from beneath doors in the shop area, and that a fire had been deliberately set in the woodshop. The sprinkler system activated and, according to Fire Chief Wayne Moore, saved the school from total destruction. The sprinkler system worked perfectly and the fire was extinguished. MORE

Home fire sprinklers can be integrated with local water supply systems with ease according to a new study. The study, conducted by Newport Partners of Maryland, looked at detailed information for 20 U.S. communities with a residential sprinkler ordinance and concluded that water supply integration requirements have been put into place, and there are no examples of insurmountable problems or issues. Neither design problems nor significant added costs were found in the communities surveyed. More

Firefighters from the Madison and Shorewood Hills, Wis., Fire Departments responded to a kitchen fire in Fitchburg, Wis. The fire started in the kitchen of a second floor apartment. It was extinguished by a single, automatic sprinkler head. Residents weren't aware of the fire it was extinguished so fast. More

Dozens of senior citizens were forced from their apartments into the chilly night air yesterday because of a smoky mattress fire caused when a cat knocked over candles inside an Airmont, N.Y., apartment. Tallman Fire Chief Bill Tarantino credited the complex's sprinkler system and the quick response by firefighters with saving the building. More

Drugstore fire prevented by sprinklers

A paper towel display was set on fire at a Glen Cove, N.Y., drugstore while about 50 people were in the building, but no one was seriously injured, police said. The sprinkler system was activated, preventing major damage to the store. More
