Hydraulic Calculations - Part Three Now Available Online

Part Three of the American Fire Sprinkler Association’s (AFSA) four-part Fire Sprinkler Systems Hydraulic Calculations online training series is now available! This two-hour interactive online course is accessible anytime through AFSA's e-learning courseware portal eCampus. Upon completion of Part Three, the student will be able to evaluate minimum water supply needs, determine adequacy of water supplies, understand the principles behind selecting design areas, understand hydraulic junction points and pressure balancing, and know how to use hydraulic worksheets to complete hydraulic calculation of a dead-end (tree) system. The Hydraulic Calculations series is available online exclusively at AFSA’s Fire Sprinkler eCampus. More

Sprinkler Assists Fire Fighters in Pellet Plant Fire

Confluence Energy’s wood pellet plant in Kremmling, Colo., had a fire scare. The plant’s sprinkler system kicked in quickly, however, and when the Kremmling Fire Department responded the fire was already almost contained, said Kremmling Fire Chief Tony Tucker. “It got hot enough to burn insulation on the roof itself,” he said. “The sprinkler system definitely saved the day. It would have been a lot worse.” More

Sprinkler System Helps Contain Milk Plant Explosion Fire

An explosion at California Dairies Inc.'s milk processing plant in Visalia, Calif., sparked a two-alarm fire and sent smoke spewing out rooftop vents. The sprinkler system went off automatically and helped control the fire. Firefighters then entered the building and put out the fire. Seven fire engines and ladder trucks from the Visalia Fire Department and two engines from the Tulare County Fire Department responded to the incident. More

Fire Prompts Efforts to Strengthen Building Code Requirements for Sprinklers

Sprinkler Put an End to a Fire Started by Lit Candle

Two floors of a high-rise assisted living complex were evacuated after an early morning fire in Omaha, Neb. Investigators said the fire broke out on the 13th floor of the building and was contained to a living room. The sprinkler system activated and contained the fire. A small fire in the duct system of a piece of machinery at Milso Industries Inc. in Richmond, Ind., caused company officials to send workers home. Richmond firefighters responded to a call but a sprinkler system inside the duct work contained and extinguished the fire, according to Richmond Fire Chief Mike Crawley. More

Sprinkler Prevents Death in an Apartment Fire

A woman, who had locked her door preventing the entry of firefighters, was severely burned, but survived, a "suspicious" fire at an apartment complex in Pasadena, Calif. thanks to a fire sprinkler system. The 27-year-old woman was hospitalized following the fire, which was reported in a third-floor apartment, the Pasadena Fire Department reported. Arriving firefighters found that a sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. More
