Sprinkler System Saves Senior Citizen’s Life

A Crescent City, Calif., women caught herself on fire as she leaned over a candle. Sherry Slusser, of the Crescent City Senior Apartments, was wearing a shawl that ignited in her apartment; she suffered second- and third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body, said Crescent City Fire Chief Steve Wakefield. "This is the first time since I've been in Crescent City that I have seen burns like that," Wakefield said. "What gives me hope, is that she was talking clearly to us. Because the sprinkler system was so effective, she may not have had the breath of superheated air that kills fire victim's lungs." Sprinklers Extinguish Fire at the Improper Bostonian
from Cape Cod Times – Nov. 6, 2008
The Improper Bostonian in Dennisport, Mass., was damaged by fire and police were looking for a suspicious white, box-style, work van that may have been associated with the blaze, police and fire officials said. No one was injured in the fire that left the back portion of the building significantly charred. Firefighters from Dennisport with assistance from the Harwich Fire Department doused the flames, which were quickly extinguished with help from the structure's sprinkler system. The damage was mostly on the outside of the building, a fire department spokesman on the scene said. More

Sprinklers Help Squelch Two Tampa Apartment Fires

Sprinklers helped save the day for more than 40 Tampa, Fla., apartments in the past few days, Tampa firefighters say. A kitchen in a third floor apartment had a small grease fire. A sprinkler head opened, extinguishing the blaze. The apartment sustained minor damage, but no one was injured. In a separate incident, firefighters came to a blaze at Post Rocky Point apartments. Firefighters arrived to see that two fire sprinklers had mostly extinguished a small grease fire in a third-floor apartment. The rescuers treated a 24-year-old woman with burns on her face, arms and hands. She was taken to Tampa General Hospital. More

Assistant Fire Marshal Tommy Gregory says the Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm at Gerrard Hall. Fire crew entered the building and determined there was a fire inside and the sprinkler system had activated. The fire had been partially extinguished by the sprinkler system. Crews finished extinguishing the fire and started salvage and overhaul operations. The fire was contained to the area of origin. More

A commercial building in Anaheim, Calif., went up in flames as workers were inside, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters were called to Alstyle Apparel after a sprinkler system was activated, said Anaheim Fire Department Spokeswoman Maria Sabol. Sabol said the sprinkler system was able to control the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. More

Sprinkler Keeps Apartment Fire in Check

Grand Forks, N.D., officials say an early morning fire that forced 35 residents of an apartment building to leave their homes was caused by a pan of oil left on the stove to overheat. No one was hurt in the fire at the Ryan House. Officials said the building`s occupants were bused to a senior citizens center and the building`s automatic sprinkler system held the fire in check.
