Auto Czar to Take Manufacturing Helm

President Barack Obama will announce that he's tapping his chief auto adviser to try to revitalize the struggling U.S. manufacturing sector. Ron Bloom will assume the title of senior counselor for manufacturing policy, in addition to his role as senior adviser on the President's Task Force on the Automotive Industry. Low Steel Demand Pushes Severstal Into a Loss

Russian steelmaker OAO Severstal that lower demand for steel pushed it into a second-quarter net loss, but added it sees encouraging, albeit fragile, signs of improvement in the third quarter. The company, controlled by tycoon Alexei Mordashov, said that further improvements will depend on the pace of global economic recovery, as well as industry production and pricing discipline.  More

Shandong Iron Acquires Rizhao Steel Through Venture

Shandong Iron & Steel Group, China’s sixth-largest mill, will take over closely held Rizhao Steel Holding Group by acquiring two-thirds of a new venture between the two steelmakers. Shandong Steel will pay an undisclosed amount for a 67 percent stake in Shandong Steel Group Rizhao Co., the official Xinhua News Agency reported.  More

German Economy Minister Hopes for Quick GM Opel Decision

German Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said on he hoped the board of General Motors Co. would make a clear decision on the future of its European unit Opel when it meets this week. Frustration with GM over Opel is mounting in the German government, which has come out strongly in favor of Canadian auto parts group Magna's bid for the carmaker.  More

GM Plant Restarts Production in Venezuela

General Motors Co.'s Venezuela affiliate says it has restarted an auto assembly plant that was idled for two and a half months. GM Venezuela said its Valencia plant resumed production of passenger vehicles. The company halted operations at the plant June 19, citing a lack of imported parts due to delays in obtaining dollars through the government.  More

Key Issues for Wind Energy's Future
