U.S. industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September

Industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September after an upwardly revised gain of 1.2 percent in August, the Federal Reserve Bank announced. For the third quarter as a whole, output advanced at an annual rate of 5.2 percent, the first quarterly gain since the first quarter of 2008 and the largest gain since the first quarter of 2005. The latest Metals Activity Report from Metals Service Center Institute shows that, with steel shipments from metals service centers slowly rising, inventories of the metal, in decline since early last year, rose slightly in the United States and Canada. Shipments of aluminum products also rose slightly, but inventories of the light metal continued to decline in both countries. September shipments of steel products from US metals service centers totaled about 2.56 million tons, down by 31.4 percent MoM but ever so slightly higher than August shipments. More

General Motors Co., looking to finalize the sale of its Opel unit to Magna International Inc. as soon as midweek, may need to revisit the bidding process that led to the sale of its German unit after the European Union raised fresh concerns about that process, according to people familiar with the matter. Mitsubishi announces wind turbine plant in Arkansas

Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MSPA), announced its intention to build a wind turbine manufacturing facility in Fort Smith, Arkansas. MPSA plans to invest approximately $100 million in the project, which could employ as many as 400 people. "We are very excited to announce today the future MPSA Wind Turbine manufacturing site in Fort Smith, Arkansas," said Koji Hasegawa, President and CEO of MPSA, based in Lake Mary Florida. More

Rumors of a possible motorcycle brand for Volkswagen aren't anything new. It's a well-known fact that Ferdinand Piech, Chairman of Volkswagen's Board, wishes that the German automaker had purchased Ducati back in 1985 when the Italian bike manufacturer was in dire financial shape. As recently as last year, Piech - himself a Ducati rider even at age 72 - commented that Volkswagen could still purchase an unnamed motorcycle manufacturer if the conditions were right. More
