Winners Announced for AGTA's Spectrum Awards™ Competition

Winners have been named in the 2010 AGTA Spectrum Awards™ competition hosted by the American Gem Trade Association. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the competition. The competition was
held October 24-25, in New York, NY at a penthouse studio in Greenwich Village. Judges for the 2010 competition included designer/educator Cecelia Bauer, gem artist John Hatelberg, Nicole Keating of W magazine, Benjamin Macklowe of the Macklowe Gallery, writer/consultant Marlene Richey and Mish Tworkowski of Mish New York. Christie's fetched $46, 513,050 at
its most recent sale, Jewels: The New York Sale & The Annenburg Diamond, Rare Jewels and Objets d'Art: A Superb Collection. The international auction house reports that 327 out of 385 lots sold, which achieved a combined sell-through rate of 85 percent by lot and 94 percent by value.

The Field Museum has been reborn the Rock Hall of Fame. Picture knuckle-busting rubies, emeralds and sapphires, a fist-sized topaz and enough diamonds to make Elizabeth Taylor dizzy. All diamonds offered at Rio Tinto's 25th Argyle Pink
Diamonds Tender have been sold. The company did not disclose prices, only saying they achieved "exceptional result that belies the global financial crisis of the past 12 months."
Titled Grand Passions, this year's tender offered 43 pink diamonds from Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia, including four heart shaped gems.

On a dark night in September of 1792, someone made off with the 69 carat French Blue diamond. Confiscated from King Louis XVI by the revolutionaries of the
French National Assembly, the gem, along with the rest of the French Crown Jewels, had been secreted in a royal storehouse for safe keeping. Many of the gems stolen that night were subsequently recovered by the French government. The French Blue was never seen or heard of again.

Preparing for a tough holiday
shopping season, online retailers are beefing up their presence in online social media, a new study says. The National Retail Federation/Shop.org "eHoliday Study" shows more than 47 percent of online retailers polled said they will be increasing their use of social media this holiday season, with an understanding that shoppers use Facebook and Twitter regularly and that those tools are more cost effective, said a news release.
