2009 AGTA Spectrum Winners Announced

 Winners have been named in the 2009 AGTA Spectrum Awards™ competition hosted by the American Gem Trade Association. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the competition. The competition was held October 25-26 in New York, NY at a penthouse studio in Greenwich Village. Judges for the 2009 competition included Tom Heyman of Oscar Heyman, Donna Sturm of Verdura, Claudia Mata of Town & Country, and lapidarist Walter Casaravilla. This year's AGTA Spectrum Awards will be presented during the 2009 AGTA GemFair™ Tucson to be held Feb. 4-9 at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona. Winning entries will be displayed during the show and AGTA Spectrum Awards recipients will be recognized during the AGTA Dinner Dance and Awards Gala. More

Study: Jewelry Inflation Cools in September

The flames of inflation in the jewelry industry have finally begun to fade as commodity prices have fallen in the past few months. Jewelry price increases at both the consumer level and the producer level moderated in September, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. September’s inflation numbers are a reversal of the surging price increases which the industry has experienced for most of 2008. The much lower Jewelry Producer Price Index (JPPI) is good news for jewelers, especially retailers. More
U.S. Enforces Law Barring Myanmar Gems

The United States said it began enforcing Monday a law seeking to tighten an import ban on gems from military-ruled Myanmar in a bid to deprive the junta of precious revenue. The Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act was approved unanimously by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush in July but the US Customs and Border Protection provided a grace period for the jewelry industry to adapt to the new rules. The period expired on Sunday and the authorities on Monday began enforcing the law that aims to keep Myanmar's rubies and jade from entering US markets via third-party countries, officials said. More

The Be it grape or lilac, lavender or wine, violet, plum, puce, mauve, magenta, amethyst, pomegranate, eggplant or mulberry, there's no question that purple is the colour of the season. Indeed, not since the recessionary 1980s have we seen so much of the royal hue in our clothing, jewelry, accessories and even makeup. We're seeing other '80s-era jewel tones, too - fuchsia, teal and power red - but it's purple that's popping up most often on everyone from TV pundits to yoga teachers to bank tellers to stars striding along the red carpet.
