What a great weekend I had as a judge for the American Gem Trade Association's "Spectrum Awards!" I was asked by Robert Bentley (www.robertbentelygemstones.com), Chairman of AGTA, to be one of six

During the 26th annual AGTA Spectrum Awards™ recently held, the choice of platinum as a jewelry metal seemed to be on the rise with jewelry designers, reports say. Of the total number of 420 jewellery designs submitted for the competition this year, there was an 11 percent increase in the number of platinum
designs.

designed to look like authentic Native American art - is flooding the Southwest U.S., bamboozling tourists, irking law-enforcement officials and infuriating real Indian artists. Phony Indian crafts have been around for decades, but recently both the quantity and the quality of the fakes have soared, according to Native American artists, veteran retailers and state prosecutors.

Treasure on show in London as another trove found

The most important treasure trove found in Britain for decades went on display in London on Tuesday, the same day that another discovery valued at $1.6 million was reported found in Scotland. The Staffordshire Hoard, discovered by metal detectorist Terry Herbert in central England in July,
comprises over 1,500 mainly gold and silver items and has been compared in importance to the famous Sutton Hoo burial site unearthed in 1939.

The pieces once belonged to Prince George, the former Duke of Kent, and his wife Princess Marina.

AGL changes terminology of its ruby reports

The American Gemological Laboratory (AGL) held a meeting in New York, and has discussed changes in the terminology it uses to describe rubies. Reports add that it has decided to apply the term "heating residue" in place of the term "flux-type enhancement," when identifying the type of treatment used for rubies, when the rubies are heated for
color modifications and heal fissures. The lab has also decided to use
the term "composite ruby" when distinguishing lead glass-treated rubies from regular heated rubies.
