Blue in the Facet: Colored Stone on Display in London from The Associated Press An unusually cut blue diamond with a royal history could fetch as much as $13 million when it goes under the hammer at Christie's on December 10. Blue diamonds are exceedingly rare, and the 35.56 carat Wittelsbach Diamond has often had its color and clarity compared to the famed Hope Diamond, which is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Though somewhat smaller than the Hope Diamond, the Wittelsbach Diamond was a favorite of European rulers for centuries. King Philip IV of Spain purchased the stone in 1664 and made it part of the dowry for his teenage daughter, the Infanta Margarita Teresa. More
Luxury Brands Go Over the Top for Wealthy Clients from The Los Angeles Times The days of big spending are over for many Americans, but not for the high rollers. They just need a little encouragement to trigger that buying feeling. On a recent weekday night in the Hollywood Hills, jeweler Damiani and lifestyle magazine Angeleno took over a $9-million house with views of Los Angeles to throw a lavish party for potential customers. About 40 men in dark suits and women wearing pearls dined on frisee and filet mignon, then sipped champagne as they gazed at jewelry displays illuminated by eco-friendly fireplaces, watched videos of yachts with "Damiani" on their sails and ate coconut raspberry cake in the shape of a diamond. Such parties are becoming more common, and more extravagant, as marketers try to connect with rich clients in tough economic times. More
Why Bulgari is Paying to be Part of Britney’s Comeback from Jossip While it remains to be seen whether Circus, Spears' sixth studio album, will add significantly to the girl's 60-plus million album sales worldwide - we imagine it will - the tour Britney is embarking on will bring in huge receipts. And of course, for the right price, your brand can get in on the Britney action too. An unfinished version of Spears' second single "Circus" made the rounds earlier this week. And now, the official "director's cut" version is out, and the only noticeable difference is the addition of Bulgari's name on the singer's jewels, which she puts on in the opening sequence. Clearly, Bulgari's name was inserted in post-production, and probably only after their check cleared. More
Stephen Webster: Garrard’s New Creative Director from The International Herald Tribune Stephen Webster remembers standing in front of Garrard, the crown jeweler, as a young, unknown designer, when the grand London store was the first to give him a break by stocking his bold and edgy work.. This week, Webster can walk into Garrard with a new role as creative director. And this time, he is expected to bring more than the rock 'n' roll spirit he tuned into when he spent the 1980s in California. Ron Burkle, Garrard's current owner, is hoping to match heritage with hip and welcome Webster's smoking-hot celebrity clientele. That star-studded list includes Christina Aguilera through Cameron Díaz and Jennifer Lopez to Elton John. More
Rebel Tanzanite One Shareholder Seeks to Dismiss Board from The Financial Times Former executives of Tanzanite One have launched a shareholder insurgency against the Aim-listed gemstone miner, offering rival Gemfields another chance at acquiring Tanzanite One after a messy takeover battle failed last month. An entity holding the shares of Mike Nunn, Tanzanite One’s founder and its largest shareholder, on Thursday called a special general meeting to propose dismissing most of the company’s board because of the way it handled a hostile bid by Gemfields, an emerald miner trying to become the leader of the coloured gemstone market. This Year’s Party Clothes Are About ‘The Piece’ from The Associated Press via WTOP Federal News Radio With more people likely to enjoy smaller-scale, at-home holiday gatherings this year instead of big blowouts at restaurants and fancy venues, multitasking separates seem better suited to the social whirl than do sexy cocktail frocks. A recent spin around retailers' "occasion" dress departments found more knits and less glitz, as well as several racks of dressy slacks and skirts. Enter statement jewelry: A necklace is the key piece. More
Madonna and Marc Jacobs: Parisienne Fashion from Women’s Wear Daily When Marc Jacobs found himself in a meeting on a recent Monday morning to brainstorm about Louis Vuitton’s next fashion advertising campaign, inspiration struck. “I just blurted out, ‘I think we should do Madonna,’” said the designer, Vuitton’s creative director, mentioning he’d attended a concert by the pop icon the night before in Paris. “I was totally just blown away by it, and moved by her performance, by what she had to say, and her energy.” As the meeting went on, Jacobs tapped out a message to Madonna on his BlackBerry, and within about five minutes came the reply: “I’d love to.” More
