Jewelry Price Inflation Begins to Cool from IDEX After running at near-record levels for most of 2008, jewelry price inflation at both the consumer and the supplier level appears to be waning in the U.S. market. Earlier this year, jewelry price inflation moderated. Then, around the middle of the year, it spiked primarily because of sharply rising precious metals prices, just ahead of the meltdown of the financial markets in September and October. Finally, in response to declining commodities prices as well as softening consumer demand, jewelry price inflation has begun to moderate. More
Online Holiday Retail Sales Down for Jewelry, Watches from Rapaport News Online retail sales fell 1 percent to $24.029 billion from the start of the holiday shopping season on November 1 to this past Friday (December 19), online research company comScore found. comScore reported that online jewelry and watch sales fell 17 percent in December making it the third worst category performer ahead of office supplies (down 19 percent) and music, movies and videos (down 24 percent). Scientists: Amber Preserved Spider Web for 140 Million Years from National Geographic The world's oldest spider web has been found in a piece of amber on the south coast of England, scientists announced recently. Amateur paleontologist Jamie Hiscocks found the amber deposits, long hidden by sands and tides, and gave them to an Oxford University team. More

Shoppers Go for Less Luxury from The Washington Times Double-digit price slashing, shopping spree raffles and other giveaways aren't limited to discount stores as upscale retailers are doing what they can to entice shoppers in what's shaping up to be the worst holiday season in years.
