Volunteering at Your Fingertips from Charity Village
Trying to find someone with just the right skills for your special project? Want to create a new volunteer recruitment brochure in Spanish? Can a banker in Madrid or a marketing specialist in Australia or a Spanish student in Marietta, Ohio do the job? Once upon a time meetings were face-to-face and volunteers had assigned workspaces in the office. Conversation happened around the water cooler and mail came via the postal service. Today we have Internet, e-mail, instant messaging, tele-commuting and virtual companies. People work together who are not together. Physical space, time differences and distances have evaporated as technology has made it possible to work with others across town, across the country or even across the ocean. Technology now places a global village of volunteers at your fingertips. More
Unskilled vs. Differently Skilled: Maximize Volunteer Differences from Energize In almost all cases, when volunteers are referred to as “unskilled,” the speaker or writer actually means “differently skilled” --but only as compared to the credentials of the majority of the paid staff in that organization. We need to advocate for a better understanding of what volunteers bring to the work environment. To the Department of Labor, “unskilled workers” means something quite specific. These are people with low educational levels, perhaps even illiterate, who have received no training in any vocational skill. They often have an erratic work history and tend to bounce form job to job doing manual or menial labor. They are certainly a group of citizens deserving jobs, but they have little in common with most volunteers. More
Create a Culture of Evaluation from The Fieldstone Alliance You don’t need a degree in psychology to know that individuals tend to do what they like and tend to avoid what they dislike. You also know that getting people to try something new requires motivation. They have to see the benefit, and they have to overcome the usual human fears and discomfort that change brings. Therefore, a critical ingredient for developing and maintaining momentum within your organization to use program evaluation is the establishment of a positive, productive image of program evaluation and its use within your organization’s culture. Selecting Software on a Shoestring from TechSoup With so much software available on the market, you can find a solution to nearly every conceivable need. But if you have a simple need, how do you wade through those options to find something that will work for you without spending more on the selection process than on the software itself? For expensive or mission-critical software, it makes sense to go through an involved process to find just the right package. But what if you need something that’s neither a big investment nor particularly strategic for your organization - maybe just a simple solution to share files, allow Web site searches or track time? The Incredible Shrinking Internet Sales Tax Loophole from The Associates Press via E-commerce Times The economic mess we're in is causing states to devise tricky schemes to allow them to charge sales tax on items sold online. For the most part, e-tailers are helping, but they urge the states to make the rules more uniform and easier to follow. More
Sick Time Policy Crucial for Small Businesses from MSNBC At the checkout counter of a Manhattan office supply store, there is a rack stocked with disinfectant spray, throat lozenges, tissues and Vitamin C supplements — reminders to small business owners that a new season, the flu season, is upon us. Flu season inevitably means employee absences. And so the beginning of the year is a good time for company owners to think about their policy not just for sick time, but time off in general. Even if your ‘employees’ are volunteers, it pays to be prepared. More

Creating Focal Points in Your Retail Displays from Ezine Retail business owners and managers are always looking for the best possible means to promote items in their stores. But it is not enough to simply place the items into the retail display. Retail store owners need to create attractive looking displays that garner attention. By getting the customer's attention, they will be more likely to linger, shop longer and buy more items. Focal Points Help Your Customers A key factor in creating an attractive retail display is to create a focal point. Having a focal point is a place that people's eyes will immediately focus on when they first look at the display. Do not worry, a fancy degree in Marketing or understand lots of unusual terms is not required to create a great looking display that works. More
Retail’s Dagger in the Heart from Forbes Remember all those toy recalls for lead-poisoning hazards? Scary as they were, the cure for the problem may be worse than the disease. It's called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, sponsored by Rep. Bob Rush of Illinois. The law has a good heart: It requires manufacturers and importers to certify that their toys meet safety standards for maximum levels of lead and phthalates (chemicals that make plastic flexible) before hitting store shelves. Additional testing is all well and good, but it could end up putting even more small retailers and clothing makers out of business. More
