Volunteers Reinvigorate Tired Holiday Treat

Volunteer chefs at Midlands Hospital in Papillion, Neb., are crafting fruitcakes with surgical precision to raise money for the hospital. Planning for the fundraiser begins in August. In October, 50 volunteers come together to bake the cakes. "This is precision work," said one chef as he weighed his fruitcake. "One pound and 14 ounces of batter. Every one is perfect." So far, it seems volunteers have been successful at reinvigorating the holiday treat that has developed a tired image as of late.   More
