According to a recent survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, 44 percent of police departments report increases in certain crimes, including home burglaries that they believe are attributed to the economic crisis. And nearly two-thirds of those agencies say they are preparing plans for an overall cut in their total funding for the next fiscal year.

Breaking in with a MetroCard from NYU News MetroCard can do more than get you onto the subway — it can also get you into your dorm room. In several attempts by WSN reporters, hallway doors of rooms in six NYU freshmen residence halls were easily unlocked by swiping a MetroCard through the doorframe. According to several local locksmiths, there are devices to prevent people from unlocking the door with common items such as credit card and MetroCards. Installation into doors is easy and relatively inexpensive, they said.
