Small business credit cards flourish as loans disappear

Want a loan for your business? Hit the plastic. That's about all banks are going to offer—and the terms are much less favorable than traditional lines of credit. In one notable example, JPMorgan Chase last month unveiled its Ink suite of four new small business credit cards, with interest rates as high as 30 percent. Meanwhile, the bank has slashed other small business lending. Its lending through the Small Business Administration's primary loan program fell 80 percent this year, from 6,100 loans in 2008 to 1,250 loans in the SBA's 2009 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30. The nation's unemployment rate may have hit a 26-year high in September but many small business owners are getting ready to hire. The latest Intuit Payroll survey from Intuit Inc. finds that nearly half of the small business owners surveyed, 44 percent, are planning to hire new employees within the next 12 months. At the same time, many small business owners believe that benefits are key to attracting new hires but are finding them difficult to afford. More
