GM Pulls Logo Off Models, Focuses on Brands from The Associated Press via The Detroit Free Press General Motors Co. will begin removing its "Mark of Excellence" logo from vehicles as the company places greater emphasis on its individual brands. GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan said the company would phase out the placement of the GM logo on its cars and trucks, leaving just the GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac or Buick logos on the vehicles.

Grand Total: 690,000 Clunkers Clunked from CNN With the final numbers now in, the Department of Transportation said that nearly 700,000 old cars had been traded in for new ones under the Cash for Clunkers program. "This is one of the best economic news stories we've seen and I'm proud we were able to give consumers a helping hand," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

Weak Bumpers on Midsize Sedans Mean Bigger Repair Bills, IIHS Says from ABRN Bumpers on 2009 models of the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, and Nissan Maxima performed better than their 2007 predecessors in low-speed crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Bumpers on the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and 2010 Ford Fusion did worse than earlier models. None of the six popular midsize sedans earns the top rating of good in a recent series of tests designed to assess and compare how well bumpers resist damage in everyday fender-benders.

Auto Shops Take a Shine to Low-VOC Paint from The Olympian Tumwater Collision has joined a small, but growing, number of auto collision repair shops in the state that have switched to waterborne paints to reduce air pollution escaping from their shop. Toyota to Spend $172 Million to Raise U.S. Engine Output from Reuters Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) is investing $172 million to increase North American production of small four-cylinder engines, at a time when the U.S. market shows signs of recovering from its worst downturn in decades.
