Healthcare professionals are more at risk of getting ill when the number of sick patients rises. Hospital White Gives Way to Warmer Colors from Corvallis Gazette Times Hospitals are, by their nature, institutional. White walls, chrome finishes and the smell of bleach seem to be synonymous with a hospital stay. But at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Ore., things are slowly changing. Scott Carroll, director of facility services for Good Samaritan, held up a board covered with soothing earth tones and the colors of sea and sky, the master palette for redecorating rooms across the building. “We’re using a warmer color scheme, softer textures and using sustainable materials,” he said. In addition to the aesthetic benefits of creating a homier feeling in patient rooms and in nursing stations, Carroll said, the new materials are all environmentally friendly — a part of Good Samaritan’s commitment to “green building.” More

New Joint Commission Standard Tells Hospitals to Squelch Disruptive Behaviors from American Medical News The Joint Commission is calling on hospitals to crack down on "disruptive" health care professionals, over concerns that such behavior impacts patient care. A new commission standard taking effect in January 2009 will require hospital administrators to adopt codes defining disruptive behavior and develop procedures to discipline medical staff and other health professionals who behave badly. Multi-Tasking Maggots in Superbug Showdown from Science Daily Scientists at Swansea University (Wales, UK) have discovered a new type of antibiotic in maggot secretions that can tackle up to 12 different strains of MRSA, as well as E. coli and C. difficile. The research was funded by leading charity Action Medical Research, with support from the Rosetrees Trust. More
