Hospitals Use Lessons from Katrina to Prep for Gustav from CNN
Three years after Hurricane Katrina taught New Orleans' medical community some painful lessons, hospitals here are trying to learn from past mistakes. At Tulane Medical Center, evacuations began as a long line of ambulances took patients to the airport. From there, they were flown to hospitals outside the zone threatened by Gustav. Only the sickest patients will remain at the hospital. During Katrina, 1,600 people sheltered at the Tulane hospital. This time, only 450 patients, staff and family members are expected to remain. Patient Tower Elevates Care from Jackson Sun Every time nurse Donmeka Currie drives into the parking lot of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn., she smiles. Currie is one of many hospital employees who will start working in the new patient tower next month. "This is the best thing to happen to West Tennessee Healthcare for a while," she said. "I can't wait to start working there." For the families and friends of patients, there are more and bigger waiting rooms. The waiting room chairs will fold out so people can sleep. There are showers available in the bathrooms. Washers and dryers for laundry have been installed to help loved ones waiting on news of a patient.
