Hospitals Close in Wake of Hurricane Ike from AHA News Now
Nearly 20 Texas hospitals were closed in the wake of Hurricane Ike while several more were operating at diminished capacity, according to the Texas Hospital Association. According to the Louisiana Hospital Association, the majority of Louisiana hospitals fared fairly well during the hurricane, with only South Cameron Memorial Hospital in Cameron Parish currently closed because of flooding. Michigan Hospitals Provide Nearly $2.6 Billion in Community Benefits from AHA News Now Michigan’s nonprofit hospitals last year provided nearly $2.6 billion in community benefits, the Michigan Health and Hospital Association reported. That includes more than $2.1 billion in unreimbursed medical care. Other community benefits include losses on health professions education and research; free clinics, health screenings and immunizations; health education and outreach programs; and family support services. In an effort to eradicate hospital infections, next month the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will stop paying for some costs related to treatment of infections contracted while in the hospital.
