Public tells healthcare workers: get your H1N1 flu vaccine

As H1N1 influenza vaccine begins to be shipped across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasize getting the first doses to high-priority groups. One such group is healthcare workers. A report released today by the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health shows 87 percent of the public believes healthcare workers should be required to be vaccinated against H1N1 flu in case of an outbreak, while only 38 percent of healthcare workers intend to get the H1N1 flu vaccine. The Chicago-based non-profit organization, MRSA Survivors Network launched the first inaugural World MRSA Day event on Oct. 1st at Loyola University Chicago with great success. MRSA activists came from across the U.S. to participate and included MRSA survivors and MRSA victim family members, world-renowned epidemiologists, nurses, infection preventionists, hospital association officials and state legislators. New study addresses hand hygiene and contamination of keyboards

A new study to be published in BMC Infectious Diseases examines the issue of hand hygiene and the bacterial contamination of computer keyboards and mice. Lu et al. conducted their study in a 1,600-bed medical center of southern Taiwan with 47 wards and 282 computers. With education and monitoring program of hand hygiene of healthcare workers, the average compliance rate was 74 percent before the researchers’ surveillance. More
U.K.: Hospitals get new hi-tech chairs to reduce superbug risk

A prototype chair designed to eliminate the risk of spreading hospital superbugs is being tweaked by engineers before going into mass production later this year. The chair, the result of a groundbreaking collaboration between the Department of Health and the Design Council, may not win any awards for beauty, but its shape does avoid the nooks and crannies thought to harbour the MRSA and C difficile superbugs. The chair should soon become a staple part of the British hospital experience. More
