Two New Studies Point to Aging-in-Place Trend from Kitchen & Bath Design News More remodeling clients are planning ahead and opting to alter their homes—including kitchens and baths—for aging-in-place requirements, according to the results of two separate studies conducted by industry-related organizations. Housing to Drive Economic Stability in 2010 from Realtor.org The Chicago Federal Reserve surveyed consumers in the Midwest region and concluded that there will be economic growth in 2010, but joblessness will remain a problem. Increasing Number of Americans Are Saving Household Energy from Multi-Housing News Consumers are turning to energy-efficient products for their homes, according new research from Nielsen Claritas. A survey of more than 32,000 consumers found 25 percent of respondents had purchased an Energy Star certified appliance, lighting product, or heating or cooling equipment in the last year. Energy conserving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) have shown strong adoption with 71 percent of consumers using at least one bulb in their homes. Expectations for 50+ Market Show Modest Rise from Nation's Building News Builders of single-family housing for the active-adult home buyer market noted an increase in the traffic of prospective buyers during the first quarter of this year, according to the 55+ Housing Market Index (55+ HMI) released recently by the National Association of Home Builders. "A strong and growing number of retirees and empty-nest households are interested in either downsizing or moving to a more user-friendly home — especially if it's near their existing community," said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. "But the current market still presents significant obstacles to home owners who need to sell an existing home before buying a more appropriate one. That situation is holding many mature consumers back from moving.” More
