Industry Architects Share Design Trends for the Future in MultiFamily Housing from Multi-Housing News
A panel of architects brought together by the NAHB for a webinar entitled “Multifamily Design Trends” shared their insights as to what is driving current project funding and where the industry appears to be heading. Among the “trends for tomorrow” offered are smaller units with more amenities, readapting well-located office buildings into transit-oriented developments, and designing units to give them the appearance of a single family home, for those who wish to live the suburban lifestyle but cannot afford to purchase a home. More 
Some Good News for the Housing Market from Forbes New U.S. home sales surged 9.6 percent in July, rising for the fourth straight month and beating expectations as the housing market marches steadily back from its historic downturn. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 433,000 from an upwardly revised June rate of 395,000. Sales are now up 32 percent from the bottom in January, but off 69 percent from the frenzied peak four years ago. In related news, for the first time in five years, existing-home sales have increased for four months in a row, according to the National Association of Realtors®. More
Cornell Project Seeks to Identify Interior Design Archetypes from Interior Design Cornell University recently announced the launch of Intypes, which is short for the Interior Archetypes Research and Teaching Project, a concept that professor Jan Jennings has been working on since the 1990s. The project is the first of its kind to assemble contemporary design theory in a searchable, online database that includes imagery from real buildings. To date, the project has named nearly 70 interior archetypes. More
Architecture Billings Index Bounces Back After Substantial Dip
from Interiors & Sources The Architecture Billings Index (ABI), a leading economic indicator of construction activity, was up almost 6 points in July following a 5-point dip the previous month. The ABI reflects the approximate 9 to 12 month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported that the July ABI rating was 43.1, up significantly from 37.7 the month prior, but still indicating a decline in demand for design services. More
Exhibition Spotlights Celebrated Herman Miller Design Process
from the Muskegon Museum The Muskegon Museum of Art, Mich., announced its creation of a traveling design exhibition, Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller. The exhibition opens in Muskegon on August 20, 2009, and will subsequently tour as many as 15 American cities into 2013. The exhibition explores the collaborative problem-solving design process employed at the world-renowned and West Michigan-based furniture company, Herman Miller, Inc. More

Hotel Chains Report Declining Rates, Revenue from Hospitality Design Magazine Multibrand hotel companies are reporting significant year-over-year drops in rates and revenue for the second quarter of 2009, as industry analysts continue to move expectations for the year downward. A recent report from Smith Travel Research indicates that moderate declines will continue throughout 2010. More
Perfect Storm Could Bring Retail Back to Life in Q1 2010 from Commercial Property Executive When the housing market collapsed, retail was the first commercial real estate sector to suffer the consequences, but signs indicate that the industry may begin to bounce back as early as the first quarter of 2010 following an anticipated fourth quarter 2009 bottoming out of the recession, as per Jones Lang LaSalle's Mid-Year Retail Outlook for 2009.
