Deer Numbers Solid; Racks Small from the Abilene Reporter News
Not many Big Country deer hunters have been caught complaining about the recent hunting season across north and central Texas. As advertised, there were plenty of healthy deer to hunt, although the number of really big-horned bucks was way down due to the oft-dry weather we experienced during the past winter and spring. More
Resolve to Organize Your Outdoor Gear This Season from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Let's face it - it's tough to get rid of stuff or reorganize it - especially outdoor gear we've amassed. Harder still is taking stock of what we've got and then reorganizing and reprioritizing it into concise bundles that will fit among all the other stuff we've albatrossed in the space we call home. Whether you're a hunter, angler, camper, hiker, biker, skier - or all of the above - it's not easy to make hard and fast decisions about goodies that may serve some fruitful purpose down the trail. Better Late than Never for Quail from the Caller-Times Few interruptions stifle a South Texas field conversation quicker than the sudden stop of a bird dog racing through a thorny pasture. Even if the pointer's pause is brief, the contrast between its reaction to a possible covey and the otherwise perpetual motion of these energetic hounds should excite any seasoned quail chaser. Examples of this were frequent enough during a pre-Christmas bobwhite hunt, when early season conditions were less than ideal north of McAllen. Now is the better time to go. More

Use Offseason to Take Hunter-ed from the San Antonio Express-News Under one set of guidelines or another and depending on location and means, Texas deer can be legally hunted about 40 percent of the year. What many hunters do the remaining 60 percent of the year is plan their next deer hunt. If that applies to you, factor this into your offseason plans: By law, every hunter born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a certified hunter-education course. More
Optics Crucial on Hunting Expeditions from the Victoria Advocate I am amazed at how many hunters go in the field without good binoculars (Bino's). You don't have to break the bank and spend a thousand dollars to see deer, but I can promise you a well known brand in the proper magnification can make the difference between back strap in the freezer or going to a meat market. Hunting Trip to Mozambique Provides Thrills for Hunter from The Franklin Press Ed Moon had a great time in a recent trip to Africa. He spent 10 days hunting various antelope and buffalo in Mozambique. But there was a problem for him once he returned to Franklin, N.C. "I got back and was real melancholy, coming off the high and excitement and newness of it." Moon said. "I started watching some of the videos we had made. I was like, 'We need to go back. I gotta go back.' It's that addictive." More
Ontario Outfits Offer Alternatives from the Detroit Free-Press At the Ultimate Fishing Show at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, there was no shortage of outfitters eager to fulfill a hunter’s needs. Their push: a strengthened U.S. dollar and the tough economic climate make their offerings a bargain. More

While the bear season is likely the most controversial, other significant proposals involve antelope and elk hunting and fishing for blue catfish. More
