TPWD Fights to Protect Alligator Gar for the Future from the Tyler Morning-Telegraph
It hasn't taken long for alligator gar to zoom from trash fish to trophy. There is a fear the next step could be extirpation. Fearing for the future, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Inland Fisheries Division has proposed a huge leap from an unrestricted fishery to limiting anglers to one alligator gar per day. Not surprisingly, it is a proposal met with mixed reaction from fishermen and Parks and Wildlife commissioners. More

New Mexico House OKs Elk Hunt on Federal Preserve from The Associated Press via KOB-TV Hunters may be able bid in an auction for the right to hunt elk in one of the prime locations in New Mexico under a bill that has passed the House. The legislation will allow the Valdes Caldera National Preserve to auction off a certain number of permits to hunt bull elk on the 89,000-acre former ranch in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. Overabundance Leads to Hunting of Snow Geese from The Associated Press via the Bennington Banner Vermont waterfowl hunters will get an opportunity to hunt snow geese next month as part of an effort to reduce the population of birds. A special "conservation order" was issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to allow the season, which will run from March 11 through April 15 in Vermont.
