Influx of International Hunters Expected in Namibia

Alberta Extends Ban on Hunting Grizzlies

Alberta will continue to suspend its controversial spring grizzly bear hunt into 2009 amid growing evidence that numbers of the iconic carnivore are significantly lower than earlier estimates. But Sustainable Resource Development Minister Ted Morton won’t order a status review of the grizzly -- which could see the bear listed as a threatened or endangered species -- until a five-year official count is completed next year. Meijer, a Michigan-based regional chain of retail superstores, has aligned itself with the anti-hunting group, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), in an online pet photo contest. The money donated to HSUS through this promotion, while not going directly to its anti-hunting campaign, will free up money from the organization’s general fund that can be used to attack the rights of sportsmen.
