Mentored Hunts to Provide Opportunities for Newcomers from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department A new public hunting opportunity for newcomers, the Mentored Hunting Permit (MHP), will launch this fall. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the new hunter recruitment initiative at its May 22 public meeting. The program provides limited opportunities for people interested in participating in a multi-day hunter recruitment workshop on a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wildlife management area (WMA). Report Says Nation's Wildlife Refuges Underfunded from Newsweek The Cooperative Alliance for Refuge Enhancement said in a report released Thursday to Congress that the nation's 548 refuges and the 100 million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System -- about the size of California -- is underfunded by 43 percent. The refuge system needs at least $765 million a year but is receiving only $434 million, the report says. More

NRA's 23rd Youth Hunter Education Challenge Starts July 28 from National Rifle Association NRA’s 23rd annual International Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) will be held July 28-August 1 at the Mill Cove Environmental Area and Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa. Outside of conventional hunter safety classes taught nationally, YHEC is perhaps the largest and longest-running youth hunter education program in the country. About 50,000 youngsters a year take part in YHEC events held at state, local, regional or provincial levels. Up to 400 young hunters, plus parents, coaches and volunteers, typically participate in the annual international event. More

Letter Exposes Animal Rights Agenda of HSUS to Feds from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) has demanded that a USDA website correctly identify the world’s largest anti-hunting organization as an animal rights lobbying organization.The USSA sent a letter to the USDA explaining that the Humane Society of the United States' "primary purpose is to advocate for sensible public policies" and not provide direct services to shelter, rescue or provide any direct services for animals in need.
