Thousands Sign Petition to Make Texas an Open-carry State

Texas, despite its independence and frontier reputation, is one of only six states where handguns cannot — in some form — legally be worn in plain view. A group of residents wanting to change that have joined a growing nationwide "open-carry" movement. More than 3,500 people have signed an online petition asking Gov. Rick Perry and the Legislature to make Texas an open-carry state. More

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), along with the California Association of Firearms Retailers, has waged an advertising campaign in opposition to AB 2062 -- legislation that would create severe restrictions on all ammunition sales and purchases in the Golden State. Legislation (AB 2062) that would create obstacles for all ammunition sellers and purchasers was already defeated in the California Assembly Public Safety Committee once, but the sponsor has chosen to circumvent legislative rules by reintroducing the bill in the same session. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes Expanded Hunting and Fishing

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today opened a 30-day public comment period on a proposal to add one national wildlife refuge to the list of areas open for hunting during the 2008-09 season and increase hunting opportunities at six other refuges. Initially proposed in July 2006, the hunt program changes were withdrawn because of a lawsuit and subsequent court decision requiring some refuges to revise Environmental Assessments to incorporate cumulative impact analyses. Indiana Shoreline Hunting Conflict Draws Lawmaker Interest

Some Indiana lawmakers plan to consider this summer whether they should devise a bill that tells hunters to avoid certain populated bodies of water. The issue has drawn the attention of state Rep. Craig Fry, D-Mishawaka. He introduced a bill last session that would have prohibited hunting in counties with more than 250,000 people along any spot in a river less than 750 feet from a densely populated shoreline. More

Among his claims are that NRA “defends terrible wildlife abuses,” “deviates from ethical standards of hunting,” and attempts to hide these practices from the public. Pacelle also states, “What the HSUS attempts to do in the hunting arena is hold the hunting community to its own professed standards, and to put a stop to hunting practices at odds with the core notions of fairness and particularly inhumane or wasteful killing.” More

Parsippany, N.J., police shot and killed a 125-pound male bear this morning as it was headed toward Intervale Elementary School, where youngsters were outside enjoying a picnic.
