Get Your Hunting License Early from the Abilene Reporter News
There is a bit more to purchasing your license early in this mix. As Tom Newton with TPWD's licensing section noted, "If you wait until the Labor Day weekend, you're probably going to be standing in line to buy a license. Savvy hunters have figured it out and are buying their licenses early." More
TPWD Accepting Applications for Hunts from the Tyler Morning Telegraph If success in business is a demand for a service, consider Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s public draw hunts a success. The draw hunt program offers controlled hunts on wildlife management areas and state parks throughout Texas. Last year almost 45,000 Texans applied for about 5,500 hunting spots around the state. That nine-to-one ratio has been fairly common in recent years, but doesn’t mean the demand is that high for every position available. The program offers hunters a shot at mule deer, javelina, exotics, alligators, feral hogs and bighorn sheep. More
If You’re Hunting For a Place to Hunt Doves... from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram The dove season was fast approaching and the land I’d hunted the previous year was now a subdivision. I was faced with trying to find a local lease — three weeks before the season-opening weekend. Often, the only thing tougher than shooting a dove darting and diving at 60 mph an hour is finding a lease. Word of mouth is the best bet, but not everyone has that option. More

Video: The Hunters of Tomorrow Learn Safety Today from ABC12-TV The preliminary estimate of total ducks from the 2008 Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey was just over 37 million, which is a nine percent decline from last year's estimate, but still 11 percent greater than the 1955-2007 average. In the U.S. and Canadian prairies, population estimates of many species declined; while populations increased in the boreal forest to the north, likely reflecting in part those birds that overflew the prairies because of drier habitat conditions there. Mountain Lion Sightings on the Increase in Texas from the Plano Courier I have spent a lifetime in the outdoors but have never actually sighted a wild mountain lion. I’ve come close, very close, on several occasions but can truly say I don’t remember ever actually sighting a lion in the wild. Mountain Lions are extremely secretive animals but sightings are becoming more and more common in Texas and much of the Southwest. There are simply more sets of eyes scanning the woods and roadsides these days than a few years ago. More

Moose in the Mountains from Sports Afield Moose, regardless of the subspecies, have never been Harvard material. A bit dense, perhaps, but mostly too big and isolated to feel threatened by the odd, puny human that enters their domain. Grizzlies, wolves, and cougars they know to fear, but Homo sapiens? The few times we enter their space we’re either no threat (Wow! Look at the moose! Click.) or they’re dead. (Bang.) Where’s the education in that? And that’s part of the magic in moose hunting. More
