Safety Stressed as Hunting Season Begins from KFDA-TV
A Texas law, in effect for the first time this season, now allows kids as young as nine to legally hunt alone. Hunting season has been underway for almost a week and as it continues on through the winter there are some important things hunters and non-hunters should know. More
TP&W's Timing for Steel Shot Study Off Target from the Dallas Morning News On Aug. 30, two days before dove season began, Texas Parks and Wildlife began an ill-conceived scientific study comparing the effectiveness of steel shot vs. lead shot. They brought in volunteers to shoot doves under the watchful eye of trained observers. Using a special permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, they shot the birds in Brown County, one of the most popular dove hunting counties in Texas, in an exercise that ranks among the worst public relations blunders in TP&W history. Birds Plentiful Near Treasury Department Site from the Dallas Morning News When dove season rolls around, Cory Anderson takes it to the bank. Anderson, a Fort Worth hunting outfitter, actually takes dove season to a better place than a bank. He takes it to the place where money is printed – the U.S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It's like a gold mine for doves. More
Namibia Stands Firm on Hunting from the Times Online Following last week’s news that desert elephants were being targeted by hunters in Namibia, tour operators are calling for a moratorium in a bid to head off a tourist boycott. Of the six breeding bulls sold to trophy hunters - at £20,000 a head - five are already dead. The Namibian tourism minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, says that the elephants can sustain the losses and that the quotas include “problem” animals. More

Slim Pickings as Israel's Hunting Season Opens from The Jerusalem Post Israel's hunting season opened this week, but there are both fewer animals to hunt and fewer places in which to hunt them this year. The Nature and Parks Authority (NPA) has, over the years, been reducing the number of hunters, the animals they can hunt and where they may be hunted. At present, hunters can only shoot doves, turtledoves, pheasants, coots, ducks and, occasionally, wild boars. All other animals are prohibited. More

Man Gets 400 Pound Black Bear from the Wahpeton Daily News Ted Doberstein has always been an avid outdoorsman. The 1978 Wahpeton, N.D., High School graduate saw success on the wrestling mats at the North Dakota State College of Science and at North Dakota State University. But perhaps Doberstein's biggest thrill came last month in northwest Ontario, Canada, when Doberstein bagged a 400 pound black bear that he hopes could be classified as a trophy black bear. On the Hunt from Newsweek Like many Alaskans, Gov. Sarah Palin is a lifelong hunter and strong proponent of Second Amendment rights. A longtime member of the National Rifle Association, she told USA Today when she was running for governor as a Republican in 2006 that "We hunt as much as we can, and I'm proud to say our freezer is full of wild game we harvested here in Alaska." Her own parents had just returned from hunting caribou when they learned that she had been tapped as Sen. John McCain's running mate. More

Combining Hunting, Fishing a Great Way to Say Goodbye to Summer from the Northwest Arkansas Times Labor Day is generally thought of as the bridge from summer to fall and I took advantage last weekend by dabbling in both seasons. Bidding a bittersweet adieu to one while welcoming the other certainly has its benefits. Heck, anytime a person can fish one day and prepare for hunting season the next is, well, a time worth having.
