How the Decline of Hunting is Changing the Natural Order of Predator and Prey from Sports Illustrated
Usually when wild animals change their behavior and become more visible to humans, it is because they are diseased or hungry, or they have been drawn out by Dumpsters, dogs or other signs of human development and urban sprawl. These factors explain in part why there have been so many recent sightings of bears on golf courses or in suburban trees, why a herd of bison wandered into the Canadian village of Fort Providence two years ago, why deer have become a traffic hazard throughout the U.S. and why coyotes sometimes show up on Sunset Boulevard. But over the last decade the North American ecosystem has also seen an unanticipated trend upsetting the always delicate relationship between man and wildlife: The hunters have been going away. More
Austin Program Helping Young Hunters Grow from the Dallas Morning News The author relearned some valuable deer hunting lessons from Jon-Michael Greaney last weekend. Jon-Michael is 10, and it had been awhile since the author hunted with a 10-year-old. You tend to forget the little things that make deer hunting difficult for young hunters. More
Commentary: Crimes Hurt Essence of Hunting from the Houston Chronicle Two incidents this past week shine a light on the troubling way some value white-tailed deer. Both underscore the effects of seeing white-tailed deer simply as objects or commodities and not as wildlife with deep, multifaceted intrinsic values. One involved the criminal killing of a single deer simply for its antlers. The other potentially put Texas’ entire deer herd at risk. The common denominators were greed and an absence of understanding — or maybe even caring — of the incredible significance of how and why the average person chooses to hunt and perhaps take the life of a deer. Deer Hunting Dream Comes True for Sick Boy from the Sun Herald It was three years ago that Kaleb, a 15-year-old from St. Martin, Miss., was diagnosed with brain cancer. Kaleb faces a second bout with a Grade 4 brain tumor known as glioblastoma multiforme. The tumor was discovered at St. Jude on Nov. 9, meaning Kaleb, who has been undergoing chemotherapy since June 2006, was embarking on another struggle in life. Not knowing which direction to go in terms of helping Kaleb out, a friend of mine, Cindy Champagne of D'Iberville, Miss., told Doug Borries of Dynamic Outdoors and me that he wanted to go deer hunting. Slump, Weather Slow Sales of Hunting, Fishing Licenses from the Houston Chronicle A series of shattering blows, meteorologic and economic, slammed Texas’ hunting and fishing communities over the past four months, causing many Texans to abandon, at least temporarily, their recreations. The result has been a significant decline in sales of the fishing and hunting licenses that almost wholly fund state programs that manage wildlife, fisheries and other natural resources in Texas and provide and support much of the hunting and fishing opportunities across the state.
