Beastly Landscape can be Paradise for Birds from the Dallas Morning News When Mother Nature smiles on quail hunters, South Texas is the Garden of Eden for bobwhite quail. Bird populations tend to ride a roller coaster in this brushy, rolling terrain not far from the Laguna Madre. It's too early in the season to know for sure, but it looks as if this year's quail population is between a peak and a valley. More
With Age Comes a Different Perspective on Hunting from the Tyler Morning Telegraph In the winter of my 54th year, I realize I have discovered patience. It was a Zen-like moment that came while deer hunting in a driving rain storm. This self-understanding began when several doe walked in front of the stand. It was really driven home when a buck, a shooter on this particular ranch, walked from right to left too quickly to get off a shot. More

A Revival of Life on the Prairie from the Houston Chronicle When hunting buddies Jim Willis and John Webb purchased the 225-acre WW Ranch near the San Bernard River in 2000, the overgrazed property had become "a wildlife desert," as Willis phrased it. The pasture couldn't support anything but cattle. So, they replaced the so-called improved grasses commonly planted in the area with native varieties, such as little bluestem and switchgrass, to restore habitat for bobwhite quail and other birds. Scores of them now nest in the grasses while the ranch's cattle graze nearby. More
The Greatest Threat to Your Hunting Dog May be You from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal With fall wingshooting seasons under way, there undoubtedly have been thousands of pointers, setters and retrievers released from dog boxes in the back of pickups and SUVs as hunters pursue everything from ducks and geese to quail and pheasants. And though most hunters could never imagine harming their or someone else's bird dog, more often than not the biggest hazard a dog will face in the field can be inflicted by those they wish to please. East Texans Go on Hunt They'll Never Forget from the Lufkin Daily News For many outdoor enthusiasts when the weather gets cold and fall starts blowing in, it can only mean one thing: hunting season. East Texans love their deer and it seems they love the hunt even more. Jim Barker has been taking friends and family on hunting trips to Colorado for more than 30 years and this October was one of the most memorable trips Barker said he's ever been on. More
Hunting, Long in Decline, Is Back on the Rise from FOX News National and annual statistics have yet to be tallied, but hunters across the country are in agreement: Hunting is making a comeback. More people are grabbing their guns and heading for the woods, and it's mostly because of the recession. Hunters say the main reasons for the uptick are that it supplies cheap food and rising unemployment and a slowed economy have given people more time to spend in the woods. More

By Investing in Private Clubs, Hunters Can Avoid the Hassles from the Boston Herald As any experienced duck hunter knows, the problem with public hunting areas is that they’re public. The public is prone to arrive too late, set up decoys too close, shoot at ducks that pass out of range and generally make hunting frustrating for those who are trying to do it right. Hunting ducks on private property guarantees a more aesthetic experience and often a more productive hunt. Leasing is the least expensive way to secure a private duck pond, but serious hunters might also consider fractional ownership.ions in July to as much as 50 inches of rain in some areas by October, and that spurred adult quail into laying and hatching eggs. Safari Days from American Hunter It was day one of my 10-day “virgin” safari in Namibia. Over rusks with Johan Koetze, our PH (professional hunter and partner in Kalahari Hunting Safaris of Namibia), I probed for a hunting strategy. Johan was cheerfully optimistic. “Let’s go see what we can find for you!” he said, smiling knowingly as my confidence rose. By day’s end, I would sense what it’s like to live, rove and even to perish in the Kalahari Desert’s rusty red sand. More
