Breakers Get New Standard

The Ohio Board of Building Standards has voted to adopt the 2008 National Electrical Code, a move aimed at making new homes in Ohio safer from the threat of electrical fires. The national electrical code requires a special circuit breaker -- called an arc-fault circuit interrupter or AFCI -- on circuits for bedrooms, living rooms, sunrooms and other areas where families gather or sleep. Chatham Twp. Apartment Fire Sparked by Water Leak

The Christmas night fire at the Chatham Hill Apartments that destroyed eight units and rendered another eight units uninhabitable apparently started when water leaked into an electrical outlet and triggered sparks, the township construction official said Monday. The township's electrical inspector, Anthony Giampietro, agreed the leak likely caused the fire, Impink said. More

According to recent findings by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 24,000 children 10 years of age or younger were treated in emergency rooms for accidents related to electrical outlets over a 10-year span. That equates to seven children a day receiving treatment for injuries ranging from electric shock to third-degree burns and, although rare, in some cases resulting in fatalities. More

The 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC) includes a new definition covering “Intersystem Bonding Termination” and a total rewrite of Section 250.94 covering the requirements for installing a bonding connection point for communications systems. Only time will tell if the communications industry will use or disregard the intersystem bonding termination, as so often was the case with the old method of using a No. 6 bare copper conductor stubbed out of the service panel. WorkSafe Investigates Electrocution of Australian Cleaner

North Carolina Approves Duke Energy's Solar Plan

The North Carolina Utilities Commission recently approved Duke Energy's plan to place solar panels on hundreds of rooftops across the state. The $50 million plan will help Duke meet state requirements to generate electricity from renewable energy sources such as the sun, wind and plants. Duke expects to generate eight megawatts of electricity from panels at up to 425 sites, enough to power 1,300 homes, within two years. More
